Daycare is Exhausting

Here's Jack sacked out after coming home from daycare. This seems to be the trend. There's so much to look at, he's exhausted when he gets home. He's doing great there, by the way. Every time I pick him up he's chillin, just as peaceful as ever (and not all the other babies are, let me tell you...)

I hope you all are appreciating his cow outfit from Grammy Wisconsin. And could those socks be any cuter? I don't think so.

Today was the first day of school for my students, so I had my first "regular" part-time day. Glorious. And it's like Christmas morning every time I get to the daycare to pick up Jack. I can't wait until he gets a little older and is as excited to see me as I am him.

Tonight the three of us are going out to dinner for Todd's birthday. Perhaps I should go nap with Jack so that I am physically and emotionally ready for a delicious dinner.

Brokejack Mountain?

Linda (one of Jack's "teachers") told me today that Jack had a lot of fun playing on the mat with Brady, a three-month old who is slightly less cute than Jack. She said they were even holding hands.

Unscathed

This picture of Jack was just taken minutes after we returned home from day one of daycare. He looks the same! He's even smiling!

He was there for three hours and didn't cry at all. The teachers both gave me knowing looks that told me Jack is their new favorite. I returned their knowing glances with one of my own that said "I understand completely."

We did it.

Just Minutes Before...

we head off to day one of daycare. As you can see from the photo, Jack hasn't a care in the world. I don't start work until tomorrow, but I wanted to give him a couple-hour test run today. My plan is to feed him when we get there (that way I can spy on his teachers for a bit), then head off to a nearby bar for a few drinks. Actually I'm going to catch a movie. There's a light and funny comedy out now about a bad mom who takes her child to daycare and he never forgives her. It got great reviews and apparently has a lot of twists at the end.

MY NAME IS AMY AND I'M TAKING MY SON TO A PLACE WHERE STRANGERS WILL WATCH HIM. AND I DON'T FEEL GUILTY AT ALL. AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME.

Truthfully, I'm feeling okay about it. He's such an easy-going little guy and I think he'll do great. I'll let you know when we get home how it went and how many BM's he had while I was away. Wish us luck.

What a Baby

He's got his thumb and a blanket. We were hoping he'd be a bit more unique...perhaps an index finger and a shoe. Still pretty cute, though.

Jack, Meet Uncle Danny & Aunt Kelly

Just had a fabulous visit with Jack's Uncle Danny and his super-sexy girlfriend Kelly. We were confused as to which Povondras were coming, and had a list of things to fix around the house at the ready. Instead, we drank a lot of tequila and wine, played a lot of games, and ate a lot of high- calorie foods. At one point someone in the household even had SEVEN cookies. I don't remember if that was Danny or Kelly. I was too busy peeling my carrots.

Jack was extremely comfortable in both Danny's and Kelly's arms, and Danny had no trouble making Jack laugh. We didn't make it to 6th Street this visit; perhaps Jack's 8:00 bedtime put a damper on that. But we had a great time and look forward to meeting again at Christmas.

3 Months

Dear Jack,

Well Little Man, you've been here in the outside world for three months now, although I feel as though I've always known you. Everyone says childbirth is a miracle, but you REALLY were a miracle. We thought we lost you when I was about six weeks pregnant, but you held on and your dad and I both cried when we saw your little heartbeat on the ultrasound machine. Then we went to Chile's and had lunch (I believe I had a pita sandwich with fries. Delicious.). Every time we pass that Chile's we think of you.

You were easy on me for the whole 9 months of pregnancy. Never once did you make me feel queasy. Tired, perhaps, but I've always been able to take an after-dinner nap like nobody's business. You decided to come 2 weeks early, which was fine by me. Not only did I get out of two more weeks of work, but we didn't have any of that anxious waiting and wondering if you were ever going to arrive. On Thursday, May 4, I was laying on the couch and I heard a "pop". Then my water broke. Good thing our couch fabric is resistant to stain (Durapel). I called your dad at work to tell him and he sounded a little nervous and said "Are you serious?". I was indeed. Long story short: we got to the hospital, got pitocin, starting contracting, got an epidural (please don't think any less of me), went through about 15 hours of labor, then ended up having a C-section because your head was turned and I wasn't progressing. I'm not sure if you care about all these details or not. I remember being so excited and not being able to believe that I would actually see your little face within the hour. When Dr. Harkins was about to pull you out he told your dad to take a look (I wish I could have seen it too). As your dad was looking at you, I was looking at him. Again with the tears. Then I heard your first cry and they brought you over to me so I could see you. I'd never seen anything so beautiful in my life. I can't believe that was three months ago. In some ways it seems like yesterday, and in others it seems like forever ago.

The reason I haven't written to you earlier is because in the first two months--no offense--you didn't do too much. This last month, however, you've blossomed into quite the little guy.

Things you can do now:

  • Hold your head up pretty darn well
  • Blow bubbles
  • Smile and laugh (we can't wait to hear more of that)
  • Grab for toys and stick them in your mouth
  • Kick and move your arms a lot

Ways in which you and I are similar:
  • You're BEAUTIFUL. And SMART. And BEAUTIFUL.
  • You have one eyelid that's droopier than the other (kids in high school called me a stoner because of it...I hadn't even tried pot at that time. You should stay away from it, by the way. We'll talk about that in a few years.)
  • You have EXPLOSIVE poops (I do too. A lot. Usually after something heavy or greasy.).
  • You're happy in the morning (and most of the day, for that matter).
  • You have full lips (very kissable).

A new thing you and I have been doing lately is reading Dr. Seuss's "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish." I love Dr. Seuss. I think he's hilarious. I'm not sure if you're really into the book yet or not, but when I open it up and you see the first really colorful page, you smile and kick a little bit. And you're able to sit reasonably still through the whole story (and it's a long one...sixty-some pages). Not to brag, but earlier this week I finally got through the whole book at a good pace without making any mistakes (it's quite the tongue twister).

Little pieces of trivia about you:

  • Your favorite things are the swing, the sling, kicking on the playmat and going for walks. You're also a great sleeper and you enjoy taking a bath.
  • You've recently started to notice Bones. She noticed you. Three months ago. And every day since. I can't wait to see your relationship with her develop.
  • I always know when you're about to cry because you stick your lower lip out really far. If I catch it in time, I can sometimes change your cry to a smile.
  • Your fussy time is between 6 and 8 in the evening. That's when my favorite things are the swing and the sling.

Sadly, I go back to work in a couple days. I already know that I'll miss you terribly, but I'm also looking forward to it. I'm a high school math teacher and I really like my job. Don't ever think that I like my job better than you, though. You'll always be my number one. But I think you'll like me better if I work. I need that type of stimulation (it's kind of like how you enjoy looking at that giraffe suspended above your playmat). Someday you'll know what I mean. Also, I'm only going back part-time, so I get the best of both worlds. I found a daycare that I really feel good about, but if for some reason you don't like it, give me a look or a signal of some kind and I'll take you out of there faster than you can say "Alimentum".

Oh yeah. Speaking of Alimentum, it's not just a funny word. It's what's been providing you nutrients for the past 8 weeks, ever since you were in the hospital for three days and they figured out that you were allergic to something in my breast milk. Everything is fine now and you are thriving. You have several chins to prove it. And speaking of breastfeeding, I'd like to formally apologize for the number of times I said the F-word in that first week. It wasn't you personally that I was swearing at, it was the sheer pain of my nipples being on fire.

Well, I think that about wraps up my thoughts. The picture I posted is from a couple of weeks ago and it is one of my favorites. I recently bought a locket and put that picture in it so that when I'm not physically with you, you'll always be with me.

I love love love you.

This cat in the hat is too cool for the pool

Spent the morning at Carrie's new mansion's neighborhood pool. This was Jack's (aka Fat Boy's) first "swimming" experience, and after a few initial cries (of joy, I'm sure) he calmed down and seemed to enjoy the water. My initial plan was to just throw him in and let his instincts take over (which is what we did with Bones and it worked just fine), but Carrie told me if I did that I'd be out of the running for the Mom of the Year award. Something about canines having different instincts than humans. And I've been coveting that gold-plated mini mini-van MOY trophy since the day Jack was born. It now sits atop Carrie's mantle.

Mentioning Bones/Jack made me think of another recent story that I'll share with you. I took Bones in for her yearly checkup a month or so ago. When the vet asked me how everything was going, I told her that we had a new baby in the house that Bones was having to adjust to. The vet said, "Oh, really? What kind?" I paused for quite some time, wondering what the appropriate response would be. Was it "Caucasian"? "Male"? "Homo Sapien"? She really stumped me. I finally came up with "A seven-weeker", figuring that to be safe and generic. Only then did I realize that the vet thought that when I said "baby" I meant a new pet.

No offense, Bones, but you're my "dog".

Anyway, I digress from the swimming story. A good time was had by all and a good nap was had by Jack when we got home.

One at a time, ladies. One at a time.

Honey, I really think he likes it!

Visit with G&G Becker

Had a great visit with G&G B this past weekend, filled with good food, leisurely strolls, and competitive card games. Jack also had some major breakthroughs--sleeping through the night (you read that correctly: SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT) and laughing (to the point of gasping). I can't think of anything better than listening to your baby laughing.

We once again had the realization that Jack lives too far away from his grandparents.

you must be at least THIS TALL to ride this crazy contraption

Look at those little feet...(they are actually touching the ground, in case you're wondering). This is one of those "Jumperoos", where the bear lights up and plays music when the enclosed party jumps. Jack was unsure of this piece of machinery at first, but loved it the second time around. It's a little big (can you tell?), so I put a couple blankets behind him. Problem solved. It is quite fun, I can tell you first-hand. I got into my skinny jeans and took it for a spin while Jack was napping.

Jack Does Nashville

Jack and I just got back from visiting Uncle Brian, Aunt Kimmy and Cousin John in Nashville. Had a great time. Johnny (2 yrs old in September) was really good with Jack, saying "baby" a lot as he pointed at him. (Jack--2 months old--would say "There's my cousin John, it's so very nice to finally meet you" as he pointed at John. But why make comparisons?) The only downside of the trip, as you may notice from the lack of pictures, was not enough time spent with Kimmy (who was off interviewing for some high-powered university job for a couple of the days). Luckily she had enough time to give me a pedicure, however.

I hadn't seen Johnny since Christmas and he has changed immensely. He's such a sweet, sensitive, smart little boy. And he laughs A LOT. Nice work, B&K.

Had some delicious home-cooked meals, took some great walks around the park, drank a lot of wine, ate a lot of brownies. All in all, a fabulous trip.

What Up, Cuz?

These two cousins get to meet for the first time today. I wonder if Johnny will think he's looking at an image of himself a year and a half ago...

Two Months Old

Happy 2-Month Birthday, Little Man.

Visit with G&G P

Having a great time with Gramma and Grampa P. As you can tell by the pictures, Jack is not very comfortable around them, but I'm sure that with time everything will be okay. As usual, the "hands-on" Povondras are keeping busy. Ranny's even "stolen" the middle-of-the-night feedings from me. I can't wait till they leave so I can start cooking, cleaning, and getting up at 3am again.

Wish you all lived closer.

Bath Time Comes Early at the Povondra's

Well, yesterday was the first day in Jack's entire life that he did not poop. Each diaper change I felt like I was going into battle--about to step on a land mine, if you will. This morning as he was swaying happily in his swing, I noticed a curious aroma. As I lifted him up, I noticed something seeping through his onesie.

We are talking EXPLOSION. And STINKY.

Needless to say, 6-10 wipes didn't even touch the surface, so Jack got an early bath. Afterwards, as he was on the changing table and I was getting ready to dress him, I asked him if he felt better. He smiled (I'm not kidding). Then I returned him, 5 ounces lighter, to his swing.

I decided not to post a picture of this incident.

Peaceful

This has been Jack's sleeping position the past few nights, due to post-nasal drip. He's had some congestion with a few sneezes and coughs thrown in. This is most likely courtesy of his mama, who has self-diagnosed acute bronchitis (I don't need to shell out a $25 co-pay to know what a hacking cough with a yellow mucusy discharge and labored breathing means). Fortunately Jack has been fever-free, breathing fine, and eating like a champ. He goes in for his 2-month check-up on Thursday, so hopefully all will be normal by then.

Things I've missed the most since the onset of my bronchial disease:
1) Kissing THAT FACE AND THOSE LIPS (see photo above)
2) Breathing
3) Sleeping in a position with my head at an angle of less than 60 degrees
4) Walking Bones
(I would add "eating" to that list, but in true Becker form, that has not been a problem)

Tonight we welcome G&G Povondra into our loving home, aka a "cess-pool of germs."

Smiles for Todd, who's been like a father to Jack
